What is Camp Smalltalk

Smalltalk is a wonderfully productive programming environment that runs on nearly every computing platform and has a half-dozen vendors supporting it. However, it isn't nearly as popular as it ought to be, and the vendors don't have the resources to develop it as its users would like. So, a group of Smalltalk advocates have decided to step up and help Smalltalk reach its potential.

March 14-18, 2000, we met in San Diego at CS1 to solve some technical problems that affect the entire Smalltalk community. We called this event Camp Smalltalk. We had a great time! We talked, coded, ate, swam, and hiked. Some of us had so much fun we nearly got arrested. The average attendee had been working with Smalltalk since 1990, and 75% of us had more than five years of experience. We started a bunch of Projects and rekindled our enthusiasm for Smalltalk. (The first Camp Smalltalk)

July 17-20, 2000, we met in Annapolis at CS2, building on the work done at CS1. We had a nice mix of people who were also at CS1, together with new participants. Significant progress was made, e.g. we are now well on our way to a completely portable automated ANSI Standard Smalltalk conformance test suite. (CS2 Projects). Read the CS2 Trip report
