All right, it's not exactly a project, but there's an enormous amount of stuff out there already in various forms, some of which is now PD, or which people might be convinced to make open source in some form. Once we have a portable base, porting dialect-specific stuff to make use of it or just bringing things up to date seems worthwhile, though it might better be something done after the camp.
Possible examples:
- The Bytesmiths Toolkit contained a whole lot of interesting stuff, and is now public domain. It's tied to VisualWorks (2.0?) and to ENVY, but parts could undoubtedly be ported. [Correction: it is GPL, not public domain. The last release was in June'97 under VisualWorks 2.5.2b. --Vassili]]
- SmalltalkBroker ORB? A while ago on the Squeak list, Jeff Eastman posted something saying that the licensing agreement with Promia (formerly DNS) had ended, and that he was willing to support a Squeak port. He didn't actually say "I'm willing to make the ORB open source", but if he is, a portable, production-qualtiy open source ST orb would be a very nice thing to have.
- Interval did a whole lot of interesting Squeak stuff and I think most or all of it is now public domain. e.g. there was a web browser, Alan Lovejoy did a team programming tool (Harmony ), etc. (Note - I doubt Harmony is PD, but I think the web browser I wrote while I was there is -- I'm checking on that now, just to make sure... It was supposed to end up PD -- In the meantime, you can see some screenshots from it at www.huv.com/smalltalk - Jon Hylands, formerly at Interval - jon@huv.com)
