This is STRUCTURE draft (produced by Honor & Zeljko)... we still need 2 rewise it + do BUDGET and GFX/Design!
Structure
Three similair sized modules, each one containing (for instance):
- an introduction to the exhibition - descriptions of each artwork in the show - a piece of writing placing the exhibition / artworks in some critical context - a theoretical essay introducing the theme or genre of the show (for instance ' generative art', or 'software art')
TABLE OF CONTENTS To be dveloped
FOREWORD? A short text written by either Zeljko or Marcell or everyone at Mi2 introducing Mi2 and why they are doing stuff like this + current status/recent history in Computer arts field (maybe) in Croatia.
A short text written by Radmila Iva Jankovic on behalf of GalleryPM refering to the Croatian media art scene and PM Gallery + collaboration with Mi2.
INTRODUCTION A new text commissioned by a writer which places all three exhibition modules in some kind of context, and sets out the relationship between these three fields / exhibitions. Also it would be good if this text somehow takes account of why it is significant that Mi2 have undertaken these projects. Possible writers: - Timothy Druckrey (he has visited mama, knows about at least one of the projects, and is generally one of the better writers of new media art around :) ).
I AM STILL ALIVE SECTION
- Introduction to the Exhibition The introduction should be rewritten. Darko Fritz wrote the original introduction, but this should be revisited, possibly by a writer.
- Descriptions of the Artworks Zeljko to research whether the descriptions of works, a) existed, b) still exist.
- Introduction to 1960s Art and Technology We need to locate a writer who is able to critically illuminate the significance of art and technology experiments which took place in the 1960s, and how this era in art and technology has influenced and impacted on contemporary new media practices. ossible writers could be:
- Charlie Gere, Professor of Digital Art History, Birbeck College, University of London ( particularly strong on artwork from this era, but maybe short of knowledge of developments in Russia / Eastern Europe)
- Zeigfried Sielitzky, Professor at KHM, Cologne
Introduction to Net Art
This should be a general introduction to net.art, talking about the origins, characteristics etc. Possible writers: - Alexei Shulgin, artist (we shoudl ask him to adapt an existing introduction such as the Manifesto, and possibly collaborate with someone like Olga to develop an existing text).
RECON SECTION
- Introduction to the Exhibition This introduction already exists in English, and HDLU should have the Croatian version. We probably need to slightly tweak this to make it a little bit better.
- Descriptions of the Artworks The description already in exist in Croatian, and should be at Arkzin (Rutta designed the text panels for teh show, and should still ahve the final versions of the CRoatian texts). Honor should have the English versions, and will check.
- Text Placing the Exhibition in context This text already exists in English, and it is 1500 words. It has been written by Mitchell Whitelaw, a writer and theorist based at Australian National University in Canberra. We will need to get this translated.
- Introduction to Software Art and / or Art using Gaming Software We need to commission a text providing a general introduction to the field of software art, explaining what is specific and characteristic about this field. Ideally we want the writer to in some way address the connections and disparities between works which are pieces of software, and works which more mimic games, specifically addressing the moment(s) where these fields converged and then diverged. Possible writer: - Matthew Fuller, writer / critic (is particularly capable of introducing software art, won't really want to deal with game theory) - Florian Cramer, writer / critic (we need to do a little bit of reading to check to see if he has deal with game theory et al at all in his work)
- - - - .: there is a possibility that we need to commission a small text discussing the peculiarities of game theory / gaming artwork. if that is the case, possible writers may include: - Julian Oliver, artist / writer (participant of
GENERATIVE ART SECTION
- Introduction to the Exhibition Zeljko has to write an introduction to the exhibition.
- Descriptions of the Artworks Zeljko to write an introduction to the three artworks displayed in May, plus the performances taking place in October.
- Discussion about specific moments in Generative Art Brian Eno has some existing texts disussing his own work, and projects he has been involved with. We would like to ask him to shape these reflections into a short text (1500 - 3000 words) which provides insight to his work in the exhibition, and aso his wider practice in relation to generative art.
- Overview of Generative Art We need to commission a text which introduces the field of generative art, explains what is specific and chracteristic about this field, who are the major players etc. Possible writers: - X and X, lecturers at CalArt (Zeljko to find their names) - Jon McCormack, Mitchell Whitelaw, Simon Biggs, are other possuble candidates. Honor and Zeljko to do some more research if teh CalARts people are unavailable.
APPENDIX / SUPPORTING MATERIAL / HYPERLINKED DATA
All of this needs to be generated:
- Glossary of Terms - Timeline of 'Digital' Art (request contributions from eugene, CRUMB, rhizome mailing lists and also perhaps contributers to the exhibition, etc). The timeline may be colour-coded to show what is related to the exhibitions, and what is more general. - Links to Resources / information zones relative to this field (eg. arts organisations, mailing lists, labs, portals etc). The 'ArtPort' at the Whitney's website as a timeline created bz a net artist. We could ask Christian Paul / the artist if we can use this content.
