BRIEFLY ABOUT MULTIMEDIA INSTITUTE

Multimedia Institute (short form - mi2) is cultural NGO founded in 1999, in Zagreb, Republic of Croatia. It is activly working in the fields of information technology, media culture and tactical media while being engaged in social issues and critical theory. With very reflective/critical perspective to mainstream perception of these fields mi2 has developted it's position in cultural field of Croatia and region as one of the essential centers for contemporary art/theory/activist scene.

So far mi2 has worked on a number of projects which have been recognised as innovative and successfull approaches to resolving problems that face NGO scene and civil society in Croatia. One of the primary activities that mi2 is persuing is networking and support. Activly involved in number of both regional and global network initiatives and collaborate bilaterally with EU partners on regular basis.

Most well known project is running of the net.culture club "mama" in Preradoviceva 18 Zagreb, as first public space that managed to gather youth (urban culture) with art/theory scene, while forming a new community of people who are primarly interested in new media culture, from digital arts and cyber theory to tactical media. In these terms mi2 managed to be succesfull in working with some of the most prominent organisations/individuals in the field.

our RELATIONS to DUTCH NEW MEDIA SCENE

In late 1999. mi2 has been invited to present at first internastional streaming media festival NET.CONGESTION in Amsterdam. After establishing initial contacts and forming stable information exchange with started collaborating with Dutch organisations as most promminent actors in the field. These are V2_Institute for Unnstable Media from Roterdam and center for culture and politics DeBalie in Amsterdam. We have also made contacts with STEIM and The WAAG, but our current focus in socially engaging media and low entry technologies made us more focused on working with V2 and DeBalie at this stage.

Last September 2001. we organised "ASU2", a big gathering of over 60 international non-profit networkers from fields of web art, independent media and even hackers Linux community. At the event which happened in Labin (Istria) we had a number of Dutch representatives :

After the event Eric Kluitenber and Walter Van Der Crujisen presented their work and presented Virtual Platform association (V2, De WAAG De Balie, Steim, Dutch Design Institute, Montevideo...) to the local audience and representative of The Ministry of Culture.

Recent collaborative plans include presentation of V2_ programs and projects by Alex Andiaansen schedualed for March 2003. Work with Eric Kluitenberg of DeBalie media program on presenting with us the topic of tactical media on the "e-culture" forum that is organised by Ministry of Culture of Republic of Croatia in late spring 2003.

As one of the major future collaborations is taking part in editorial board of "Next 5 Minutes" where Multimedia Institute was invited from Dutch organisers. Mi2 will also coorganise regional Temporary Media Lab that will be presented at the Next5Minutes festival in Amsterdam, May 2003.

Heaving a continous realtions with Dutch New Media organisations/projects/individuals is essential part of our long-term strategy as we hope to benefit as much as possible from the experiance (know-how transfer) of the well established system in Netherlands, that is still to be set-up in Croatia.
