Place where I will collect info while working on TheThingO2.
Motivation (inspiration):
- to learn about IRIX system
- to try out some of the free programs that work on it
- research possible future (mis)use of this now feairly cheap but wonderfull products of IT industry (EbaySGIWorkstations), in creative/artistic work
- get info on refurbished/second-hand know.computers.displays.SGI
Tasks : - install basic free software which is widely accessible for most platforms, so it can be used as simple workstation (until some experimentaor comes along)
- Mozilla + Blender + maybe Gimp + whatever
- install VNC or some other remote access software and have it as a test machine for people who wanna have access to SGI from time to time to test existing software, port their or other people's work or get introduced to the system
- map relevant websites, ftp archives, interesting projects(especially in artistic field) that use older SGI O2 or Octane
- try installing some multimedia software that needs real-time high bandwith media data streams and try to compare this experiances to see how those it stands to todays cheaper PC hardware (and is this still worth investigating). this can be interesting to discuss with long time SGI user and programmers who work in creative field Zvonimir Bakotin
