www.fsf.org/ - Free Software Foundation is biggest promoter and core of hard core Free Software advocates initiated by MIT's Richard Stallman, author of first Free tools back in early 80ties (ultima persona himself - going around promoting Free Software dressed as saint)...

www.debian.org/ - most hardcore Gnu/Linux distribution (one of many types of Linux systems), only as of recently oriented to the newcomers, media authoring and NGOs with dedicated sub-projects.

www.opensource.org/ - more (neo)liberal approach (ideology) to the technology where values are more pragmaticly leveraged in "free market"

www.slashdot.org/ - community of users around portal for nerds submiting news and references, in that process building first sucessfull comuninity media portal that is based on agregating information.

www.apache.org/ - probabbly one of most succesfull free software applications (much better than commercial offerings ... taking more than 60% of all market)

www.knoppix.net/about.php - CD-bootable (no need to instal/self configuring) Linux distribution, initated by German academic, well adopted concept by wider community for new users and easy maintainance use.

www.xiph.org/ - non-profit foundation for developing free media technologies (codecs, file formats, tools, support)

www.blender.org/ - one of first succesufull commercial -> non-commercial transfers of software products.

www.openflows.org/ - more abtsract research in cultural impacts of free/open source as culture

www.firstmonday.dk/ - journal with more academic research in impacts of free/open source as economic, cultural and technical structure.
