RasaSmite

Rasa Smite (b. 1969) is media artist, organiser and net activist, based in Riga, Latvia. Together with Raitis Smits and Jaanis Garancs, they have establisehd the Electronic arts and media centre E-LAB (1996) and The Center for New Media Culture RIXC (2000) in Riga. E-LAB (now RIXC) is organiser of the annual International new media culture festivals "Art+Communication" in Riga (since 1996).

Since 1997 E-LAB's activities are devoted to development of internet radio OZONE (1997) and global net.radio network and mailinglist Xchange (since 1997). The project XCHANGE Network, was awarded with the 2nd prize /Award of Distinction/ in the competition of electronic arts "PRIX Ars Electronica '98", Linz, Austria.

Rasa Smite also is involved in various European media culture initiatives and networks. E-LAB is co-founder of ECB - European Cultural Backbone, and intitiator of NICE - Network Interface for Cultural Exchange in the field of new media in the region of Baltic Sea and North-East Europe.

Most recent project, initiated Rasa Smite together with Raitis Smits and Derek Holzer, is Acoustic Space Lab Research Programme and International symposium on sound art, radio and satellite technologies, which took place in August 2001, at the Ventspils International Radio Astronomy Centre in Irbene, where is located former soviet army military object - Radio telescope (dish in d=32m).
