Project ASU ==========> A[r|l|c]T Servers Unlimited
Art Servers Unlimited was international meeting held in Londonu July 1998. which gatherded 48 participants from around 20 different organizations and projects.
Concived to combine conference and festival form, this was a meeting of projects from the field of net.art, alternative technologies and activistic/tactical media.
Organizers of first conference Manu Luksch & Armin Medosch expressed interst in helping to set project ASU II if held in Croatia. With regards to current situation in Croatian net space and genral trend towards unconditional comercialisation it seemed kwite logical for event to be held in Croatia.
First conference gathered a wide virety of webprojects which ware not part of the narrow interpretation of the art production and so we wanted to mark that fact as specially important (nominaly) by adding the achronims of .act(for activistic media) and .alt( for alternative technologies) with the one of .art .
This 3 exceptionally dynamic fields of production have kept some of the most important concepts neeeded for inovation in the fields of net technologies (unformal/unconstrained production, experimentation and organization). These activities free of usual market constrains
(need for profitability, short term results, meeting deadlines ...) offered new and creative ways of production on internet.
Within wide production in this area we menaged to select a number of projects whose work was beneficial to the emargence and development of internet specific structures, forms of organization, hybrid-hyper-media and netwok distributed production.
In this way net.radio stations founded inbetween few enthusiasts get exposure and mark their way on global level over internet while using it to both produce and exchange programms.
Digital media made production more accessible (in terms of price)
and closer to professional standards (in terms of quality).
Collectives start their own community based news/media projects which are competitive to the big production media centers whithout any previuosly known market logic.
New highly profilled web portals made for targeted groups of people by the people from the same field (but willing to get to terms with technology) are evolving as centers for most uptodate informations
out of reach by big mainstream portals of service providers.
