 interference: public sound  Re_Public

June 20 Ð July 20, 2003

This project is part of a three years long(2002-2005) transnational research project Re_public_art www.republicart.net, which is set to explore and develop progressive practices in the field of public art. This public sound project is one of 3 projects which will be produced over the next 3 years by our team of 3 curators/artists teaching on the Goldsmiths College Curating Programme (Programme Director Anna Harding, support team: Ilze Black, John Reardon).

Our investigations focus on the concrete experiences of non-representational practices. We will look into practices, which may entail experimental forms of organizing, which develop in precarious micro-situations for a limited period of time, testing new modes of self-organization and interplays with other experiments. The "organizing function" of art (Walter Benjamin) creates new spaces in the overlapping zones of art practices, political activism and theory production.

We are looking to expose sonic works which somehow consider themselves 'in the public interest', or works which propose to create a public sphere or generate social space. In doing this we hope to bring into light the increasing and too little explored significance of sound in the context of public art.

Our international collaborators are Eipcp, Vienna, Galerija Skuc, Ljubljana, Slovenia, Kunstraum der Universit?t L?neburg, Germany and the Latvian Centre for Contemporary Art, Riga, LV. Goldsmiths is the UK partner in this venutre. Between us, Re_public_art will be staging projects and raising debate at numerous art platforms across Europe in the next 3 years.

Interference: public sound will be located in the East End of London as well as in virtual online space. We are in discussion with key local public institutions, the Whitechapel Art Gallery, Mute magazine and Arts Admin for partnership in delivering this project, as well as being fully open to other collaborations with institutions, media partners and other public outlets.
